With Travis Head’s 137 to lead Australia to a six-wicket victory in a low-scoring final, the team ended India’s dominance run in their home competition and captured the Cricket World Cup for a record-breaking sixth time.
Head, the player of the match, and Marnus Labuschagne (58 not out) combined for 192 runs to chase down the mark of 241, quieting a strongly partisan crowd inside the 132,000-capacity Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India.
As his teammates celebrated their triumph over an India squad that had advanced to the final as the only undefeated team in the tournament, Head remarked, “Not in a million years did I think that would happen.”
“What a fantastic day. I’m ecstatic to be involved in it.
Before the final, the Indian team, captained by Rohit Sharma, had won all ten of their matches. They were going for a third trophy in their fourth title match, which had virtually stopped a nation of 1.4 billion people.
India hasn’t won a world championship since the 2013 Champions Trophy, despite its enormous wealth.
Head remarked, “Rohit Sharma was probably the unluckiest man in the world.”
Australia began the 2023 tournament with back-to-back losses to South Africa and India, but ended with a run of nine straight victories. India won the 1983 and 2011 World Cups. Its 2013 International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy victory was its most recent significant accomplishment.
