On Sydney’s Lower North Shore, a two-story house caught fire yesterday and claimed one life.
The body was found on Hollywood Crescent in North Willoughby Friday night, a few hours after the fire was put out.
Although it is known that mother-of-two Joyce Lewis died in the fire, the identity of the deceased has not yet been officially confirmed by the authorities.
About 9.30 am, neighbours noticed intense flames pouring from the property and alerted emergency services first.
At least 12 appliances and around 40 firefighters raced to the area. Arman Kum, a resident, said, “I tried to get a ladder up there but there was no chance.”
“Up until the last second, Joyce was calling my name. I attempted to arrive, but I was unable to.”
In addition, a firefighter who had burned his hand trying to enter the premises was sent to the hospital.
Lewis and her husband were reportedly the only people at the property when the fire started.
The cause of the fire is yet unknown, therefore firefighters are trying to ascertain its conditions.
