The Minister for Police has indicated that a commissioner’s inquiry will be conducted into the shooting death of a police officer in South Australia.
At 11:20 p.m. on Thursday, Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig was dispatched to a remote rural property in Senior, which is located 15 kilometres north of Bordertown. He was critically injured in the incident.
The same individual, 26-year-old Jaydn Stimson, is suspected of shooting Sergeant Michael Hutchinson, an additional officer, causing non-life-threatening injuries.
Constable Rebekah Cass, the third officer, was unharmed.
Commissioner Joe Szakacs, the minister of police, announced on Saturday morning that there will be a commissioner’s inquiry as well as a major crimes probe.
“This is a suitable, high-level investigation,” Szakacs stated to Weekend Today.
“This was a deliberate act of violence against not just Jason Doig who lost his life but the two other brave police who were there as well.”
“It is an awful period and it’s a tragic loss of life, a senseless loss of life for whom I’ve been advised by friends and loved ones, was a wonderful man,”
Szakacs further stated that Doig’s family was being consulted by the South Australian Police and Government on a memorial service.
Following a police shooting, Stimson was transported to Adelaide under police protection.
His family had earlier sent a statement to the family of Brevet Sergeant Doig expressing their sorrow.
“As a family, our hearts are broken by the incidents that occurred overnight.”
Our thoughts are still with Sergeant Hutchinson and his family as he heals from his wounds for the time being.
“Our thoughts are also with the southeast community who will all be affected by this tragedy.”
Overnight, tributes from Bordertown residents, who stated they are having difficulty dealing with the loss of their community, have poured in.
“If anyone ever got into trouble, if someone was late behind him, he’d be the first guy to turn around and help,” Michael Peters, a friend, said.
“He was a caring human being.”
