Two men are being sought by police after a truck on a major highway in Sydney’s west that was allegedly carrying $6000 worth of stolen fuel overturned.
Around 8.30 am, the incident happened at Horsley Park on the M7, south of The Horsley Drive.
When the truck tipped over onto its side while carrying roughly 3000 litres of diesel, some of the fuel spilled and there were significant traffic delays.
In the moments before the collision, the truck stopped at a service station on The Horsley Drive, according to the police, and left without paying for $6300 worth of diesel fuel.
In an effort to find the driver and passenger of the car that fled the scene, they are now requesting information.
The driver is thought to be a medium-built man in his 30s or 40s.
When last seen, he was donning a black and orange hi-vis shirt, grey shoes, orange and yellow shorts, and a white cap.
The passenger is described as having a medium build and is thought to be in his 20s or 30s.
He was wearing a hooded jacket, either black or dark blue in colour.
This morning, hazmat and emergency personnel arrived at the scene and started working to clean up the oil on the road and contain the chemical spill. The rollover did not result in any injuries being reported.
An inquiry into the circumstances of the incident is ongoing, and a crime scene has been established.
In order to remove oil from the road, emergency personnel had to close one of the two lanes going north and south.
Even though all lanes in both directions have now reopened, there are still significant delays for southbound traffic in the area, according to Live Traffic Sydney.
It tweeted, “Heavy traffic returning north to Prestons, southbound traffic is queued back to Eastern Creek.”
It is advised that drivers plan ahead and give themselves plenty of extra time, or take a different route.
