Will Fowles, the former Labour MP, was detained and interrogated by the Victoria Police sexual crimes unit over accusations of assault against a state government employee.
As part of an ongoing investigation, police revealed that a 45-year-old male was interviewed on October 12 but was later released without being charged.
Fowles has vehemently refuted any accusations or misconduct.
“Detectives from the Sexual Crimes Squad executed a warrant at a Ringwood address on 12 October as part of an ongoing investigation into an incident in the Melbourne CBD,” a spokeswoman for the Victoria Police said.
“Police spoke with a 45-year-old Ringwood man who had been detained at the scene. He was freed without being charged until more research was conducted.
“As the investigation is ongoing and given the sensitive nature of the matter, we will not be commenting further at this time.”
At the request of former Premier Daniel Andrews, Fowles, the member for Ringwood, was compelled to step down from the parliamentary Labour Party in early August.
In August, Andrews told reporters, “Everyone’s safety in the workplace is taken very seriously.”
“It’s no longer acceptable to me for Fowles to remain as a member of the parliamentary Labour Party.”
