Having been charged following a string of puzzling incidents in Western Australia’s midwest, a 19-year-old man has been granted bail.
Two days after being discovered naked on a beach, Benjamin Jack McLaughlin was wrapped in a blanket as his parents picked him up and took him from Perth Watch House.
After a brief court appearance this morning, he was given bail.
He is accused of assaulting an officer as one of four accusations. He questioned the magistrate at one point, “What’s taking so long?”
He is obligated by the terms of his bail to stay in his Hamilton Hill house and to avoid traveling more than 200 meters from a boat harbour.
The magistrate was advised by the 19-year-old’s defense attorney that “you mustn’t ban him from going to the beach” and that “he likes fishing” in addition to other arguments for allowing the teenager to be near the sea.
According to the police, on Tuesday, fisherman noticed the 19-year-old acting abnormally on a boat near Cervantes.
McLaughlan jumped off the boat and was saved, hauled to shore, and detained. He allegedly attacked two persons after that, one of them was an officer.
Nearby, there was also a burned-out Pajero with human remains, as well as a submerged Red MG. Police are attempting to determine whether the incidents are related.
A psychiatrist and community correctional officers must be obeyed, and McLaughlin must also report to the Fremantle Police Station twice a week as part of his bail conditions. In November, McLaughlin will return to court.
