In a crackdown by Victoria Police, 22 persons have been detained and numerous weapons have been recovered.
During the three-day Operation Broom, two pistols, a pen pistol, ammo, knives, machetes, and knuckle dusters were taken off Melbourne streets.
In the course of the investigation, houses in Melton and Deer Park were searched. Police also targeted the Watergardens train station and shopping center.
Police reported that 22 more persons were arrested in addition to the 45 people who received infringement notices for driving and weapon-related offenses.
In Melbourne’s northwest, the sting was intended for alleged dangerous armed offenders.
Acting Inspector Pat Cantone, the Brimbank Local Area Commander, said, “We want to send the message that we are out and about and we will hold those people accountable.”
“The consequences of carrying these weapons where they’re making a split-second decision… are just terrible for everyone involved.”
Once the operation is over, Victoria Police will concentrate on a second Melbourne area in the north-west.
