The largest manhunt Victoria has seen in eight years has come to an end with the death of armed fugitive Stanley Turvey, who was shot by police during a standoff in northern Victoria.
As he moved between Victoria and New South Wales during his three days on the run, Turvey is accused of firing a revolver near police, driving at them, kidnapping a man at gunpoint, stealing a car, and assaulting a lady.
Just after 10.15am, Specialist Operations Group officers were searching for the 33-year-old at a residence in Ardmona, close to Shepparton, after learning he was there, according to police.
According to a statement from the police, “SOG operatives were confronted by Turvey, who was armed, and shot him”
He received first treatment in the home’s driveway before paramedics pronounced him dead.
According to established protocol, the event will be investigated by the Homicide Squad investigators under the direction of Professional Standards Command.
Acting Assistant Commissioner for the Eastern Region Karen Nyholm stated that it was “not the result that would have wanted today.”
She claimed that his death would have an impact on all of the participating officers and that Turvey’s family would have suffered trauma.
Since 2015, the pursuit of Turvey, according to the acting commissioner, has been Victoria Police’s most major manhunt.
In the beginning, Turvey allegedly fought with the police on Monday in Katandra West close to Shepparton.
When authorities arrived to arrest him, according to police, he allegedly retrieved a revolver from inside a house where it is thought he had sought to remain and fired a shot into the air.
One neighbor recalled, “I heard a gunshot and then the next minute he was hauled off down the road in the automobile, by the coppers.
Two officers allegedly suffered injuries when their car slid nearby as Turvey escaped Katandra West in a stolen Holden.
In order to get to his uncle’s home in Finley, Turvey allegedly compelled a guy to drive him to New South Wales.
Later, police swarmed the Finley residence in the NSW Riverina region, but they were unable to locate the wanted felon there.
Turvey is also accused of stealing a white Hilux, threatening construction workers at Sacred Heart College, and assaulting a woman in Yarrawonga on Tuesday morning.
