A luxury electric car’s lithium-ion battery caught fire overnight, causing a fire at Sydney Airport that resulted in the destruction of five vehicles.
Around 8.30 p.m., the car caught fire in a parking area on Airport Drive in Mascot before spreading to four further vehicles.
According to Fire and Rescue NSW’s findings today, the incident was started by a lithium-ion battery that had been taken out of the luxury car and kept in the parking lot.
The Aviation Rescue Firefighting Service and FRNSW collaborated to put out the fire.
Researchers from FRNSW’s Safety of Alternative and Renewable Energy Technologies team examine the blaze’s aftermath as the incident’s investigations continue.
The FRNSW said in a statement that the findings will help to “continually develop best practice for emergency response to lithium-related fires, and inform industry on how to manage the risks associated with emerging technologies.”
