In Melbourne’s central business district, a driver struck two other vehicles before hitting a throng of pedestrians, leaving one person dead and five others hurt.
Following the chaos that started just after 6 o’clock between the Russell Street and Swanston Street crossroads on Bourke Street, the 26-year-old driver of a white Toyota vehicle was quickly taken into custody.
The Toyota struck three pedestrians at a tram stop on Swanston Street first, according to Superintendent Zorka Dunstan.
The Toyota then carried on and struck a Mazda and a Hyundai.
While two passengers in the Mazda, which is thought to have been an Uber, were brought to the hospital, the driver of the Hyundai was fatally injured.
The Toyota driver was taken into custody by two adjacent police officers.
The community is not currently under threat, and we will offer more details as soon as they become available, Victoria Police stated in an earlier statement.
From Swanston Street to Exhibition Street, Bourke Street is closed by police.
As soon as the collision occurred, shocked spectators helped those who were hurt.
Ambulance Victoria had earlier reported that there had been five injuries; one had been transported in a serious condition to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, two to the Alfred, and one to St. Vincent’s.
