Debra Campbell, a missing Victorian woman who vanished nearly 40 years ago, has been charged with murder by a New South Wales man.
Campbell vanished from her Melbourne home in 1984 at the age of just 21.
She was most certainly deceased, according to a 1998 coronial inquiry, although the cause of her demise was never determined.
A man was detained in NSW today as a result of a joint investigation between the forces of the two states, which began after Victorian police issued a public call for more information concerning the disappearance of the Air Force member in April.
The 65-year-old guy was detained in Cardiff South, a town in the NSW Hunter area close to Lake Macquarie.
He appeared in Belmont Local Court after being accused of murder.
As police work to extradite him to Victoria, he will appear in court once more on Friday.
Campbell’s mother stated that she hoped the reopened inquiry will provide the family with the urgently required answers as part of the April appeal for fresh information regarding the disappearance.
The worst aspect, according to Campbell’s mother Jean, is that no one has been held accountable for removing her daughter and that no one knows where she is or what happened to her.
“After all these years, I’m desperately hoping that the re-examination of my daughters’ case will provide us with answers.”I still adore her and miss her terribly.
When she vanished, Campbell was a soldier in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
When she failed to arrive for a shift, she was reported missing.
