Dr. Clare Looker has been named as Victoria’s next chief health officer following the resignation of Brett Sutton, who left his position on Friday.
On Saturday, Looker’s 12-month term as CHO began, and Victoria Health used Twitter to welcome her to the region.
Looker declared, “I’m thrilled and honoured to serve as Victoria’s new CHO.”
“I’m a public health physician who has struggled for 13 years with some of the complex issues relating to public health.”
Since joining the Victorian Health Department in 2016, Looker has served in a variety of top leadership positions, serving as the deputy chief health officer throughout the COVID-19 epidemic.
The Victorian Department of Health stated that she is well-known in the industry and has a solid experience in public health medicine, notably in communicable diseases, environmental health, and epidemiology.
“Dr. Looker has also worked as an epidemiologist and in clinical medicine at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.”
Sutton, who started in the position in 2019 and oversaw the state during the entirety of the COVID-19 epidemic, including Melbourne’s seven lockdowns, is replaced by Looker.
“We once again thank him for his incredible contribution to Victoria since he started in the role in 2019 and wish him every success in his new position at the CSIRO,” the department stated.
