Police are looking into why a Taser that was used before an officer shot and killed a man in inner Sydney tonight did not operate.
Around 11.50 p.m., officers responded to a block of apartments on Franklyn Street in Glebe due to concerns for a man’s welfare.
A 43-year-old man is said to have confronted them with a knife when they arrived.
Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke stated, “He certainly moved towards police with what I was advised was a large carving knife.”
He was plainly hurting himself, according to the report.
A Taser was shot by one cop, and a pistol by another.
Despite receiving medical attention, the man passed away on the spot.
Cooke added, “I’m not sure why the attachment was not functional in those conditions, but we’re talking about a pretty limited location here and sadly in these conditions on this occasion the Taser was ineffective.
“These things happened in a matter of seconds in a very constrained space while a person was carrying a knife and very, very near to police.
Therefore, it is quite tough to determine in this situation.
Police were familiar with the man from a number of incidents.
His family has communicated with the police, and they are very angry.
The circumstances of his death are now the subject of an investigation.
