A Sydney man who had been forcibly imprisoned in a foreign country for years has now returned home.
A retired baker named Chau Van Kham was detained in Vietnam in 2019 while on vacation.
The father of two and pro-democracy activist received a 12-year prison term after being charged with terrorism.
The UN declared his imprisonment to be illegal in June of last year and demanded his immediate release.
Kham’s attorneys at DPN Company announced today that he was back in his country in a statement.
They released a statement saying, “We share this happy news that Mr. Chau Van Kham is well and has returned to his family today.”
We thank everyone for their well wishes, but the family requests privacy during this sensitive time of reunion.
The Australian government, Kham’s additional legal counsel, and “many organizations and individuals in Australia and all over the world” were thanked by Kham’s representatives for their lobbying efforts on his behalf.
