Former New South Wales multicultural minister Mark Coure has issued an apology for what Labor claims was a racist remark made to one of the party’s new members of parliament.
On Wednesday during question period, Liberal member for Oatley and current shadow minister for multiculturalism Mr. Coure made the remark about Cabramatta MP Tri Vo.
Labor overheard Mr. Coure remark, “I thought that bloke [Vo] worked in catering,” although the remarks could not be heard from the chamber.
Mr. Vo responded by stating that the remarks “were in poor taste”.
But Mr. Vo insisted that he will continue to carry out his duties and represent Cabramatta.
“And that’s exactly what I intend to do — continue to be a strong voice and advocate.”
Vietnam-born Mr. Vo was speaking to a Labor Minister at the time and asking a question.
The Speaker requested that Mr. Coure delete the “offensive” comment. Mr. Coure then got up and called it a “poor attempt at humor.”
“As a former member for multiculturalism, I celebrate our diversity and our society, it is our greatest asset,” Mr. Coure added.
Labor and the Greens have criticized Mr. Coure’s remarks.
All politicians must perform better, according to NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey.
When it comes to this parliament, “both sides of politics have to step up their game,” Mr. Mookhey added.
“As this parliament continues for the next four years, it is appropriate that we demonstrate to the people of NSW that standards are improving,” the speaker said. “We are two weeks in.”
Mr. Mookhey claimed that he too had experienced offensive remarks.
“I’ve had members of parliament intentionally pronounce my name incorrectly. As a parliament, we must improve since it is unpleasant and rude.
According to Greens MP Jenny Leong, the racist remark of “such disgraceful proportions” offended a number of the audience members.
That kind of offensive remark has no place in the chamber, according to Ms. Leong.
