Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, is due to arrive in Australia today for an official visit as the two nations work to strengthen their ties.
Over the following two days, he will speak with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese about business, trade, renewable energy, and defense.
More than 20,000 members of the Australian Indian community are anticipated to attend a community gathering that Modi and Albanese will also attend tonight at Sydney Olympic Park.
Following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal to focus on American national debt difficulties, the intended Quad conference of leaders from the US, Australia, Japan, and India in Sydney this week was postponed, prompting Modi’s visit.
Instead, the Quad leaders got together over the weekend in Japan as a side event to the G7 summit.
India, the largest democracy in the world, is expected to overtake China as the world’s most populated country.
The Indian economy is also anticipated to grow to be among the largest in the world.
Greg Barton, a global security specialist, said this morning on Today that Modi’s trip to Australia demonstrated India’s openness to dialogue with the rest of the globe.
“In the past, it has frequently resorted to remaining neutral, such as by purchasing weaponry from Russia, refusing to take sides, and issues like Ukraine.
Now that’s changing, Modi is realizing that India must become a global partner, especially in the Indo-Pacific area.
Prior to Modi’s arrival, Albanese claimed that Australia and India’s relations had never been closer.
“A peaceful, safe, and prosperous Indo-Pacific is a goal shared by Australia and India. Together, we can support this ambition in a significant way.
The relationship between our countries has never been closer as friends and partners.
Modi last traveled there in 2014.
In other news, Penny Wong, the foreign minister, has said Albanese won’t visit China unless further progress is achieved in the area of commerce and consular relations.
Malcolm Turnbull, the previous prime minister, traveled to Beijing in 2016.
