Just days after he was allegedly slain in his own house, approximately 100 people said goodbye to student Md “Sifat” Isfaqur Rahman, age 23.
His casket, which was covered in a green and gold blanket, was taken into Darwin Mosque as mourners gathered there.
Vice Chancellor Scott Bowman of Charles Darwin University expressed tribute to the Bangladeshi student.
He arrived to us a 23-year-old young man who was energetic, happy, and thrilled. the vastness of the world. He now abandons us in a box. Just awful,” said Bowman.
Sifat recently moved to Darwin to begin his master’s in information technology programme.
Last Wednesday while he was sleeping, he allegedly suffered a terrible assault at his house in Millner.
Later, in Royal Darwin Hospital, he passed away.
Today, Brendan Kantilla, the suspected offender, appeared before Darwin Local Court for the first time on charges of murder, aggravated burglary, and theft.
He was held in prison pending his early July court appearance.
The Bangladeshi community is utterly terrified despite the fact that the alleged criminal is in jail.
“I’ve been going to bed with a knife on my nightstand. Shayon, a member of the Bangladesh Student Association, stated, “In my nine years in Australia, I had never considered doing something like that.
The three additional residents who shared a home with Sifat are currently residing in the Charles Darwin University dorms out of fear of going back to the house.
“They have suffered trauma. They fled their lodging because they were unable to return, according to Abdus Sattar of the Bangladesh Association.
In the upcoming days, Sifat’s body is scheduled to be returned to Bangladesh together with his aunt and uncle.
On Saturday, Charles Darwin University’s Casuarina Campus will host a memorial concert in honour of the overseas student, with all proceeds going to a Sifat Memorial Fund.
