To go along with a new AFL franchise in Tasmania, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has pledged $240 million in support for the development of a stadium precinct in Hobart.
The money will be used to build the Macquarie Point neighborhood in Hobart, which will have the stadium as its focal point.
According to Albanese, “It’s not an Australian football league if it leaves off the South Island, and that’s what has been happening for too long.”
AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan informed club presidents last night that a Tasmanian team would proceed even though it has not yet been legally confirmed.
The construction process is anticipated to generate 4200 new jobs.
A large portion of the money will also be used to build homes in Macquarie Point, some of which will be designated as affordable housing.
The stadium’s specifications have not been made public, and it is unknown how much of the financing will be allocated to both the stadium and the housing.
Albanese also said that $65 million would be spent on renovating Launceston’s UTAS Stadium in order to host some AFL games.
It was “a truly remarkable moment in time for the wonderful city of Hobart, but for all Tasmanians,” according to Premier Jeremy Rockliff.
“After decades of wanting, hoping, and dreaming to have our own side, all Tasmanians can come here and be entertained and watch their favorite footy team, which will be their own Tasmanian AFL team,” he said.
