Transport officials have warned of a rise in the “extremely dangerous and stupid” crime of clinging onto the rear of fast trains, prompting a crackdown on the possibly fatal practise.
The technique of clambering on to the back of a train as it speeds off at up to 110 km/h is known as “buffer riding.”
According to train executives, incidents have increased by almost 13% since 2021, and a jump during school breaks is also to blame.
In the previous five years, including this year, 11 people have lost their lives as a result of unauthorised trespassing in rail corridors, according to Sydney Trains.
Unsettling video has been published showing what looks to be young kids jumping onto the backs of trains as they leave the station and holding on as they leave.
Sydney Trains Chief Executive Matt Longland stated that the company is working with NSW Police to identify perpetrators using CCTV.
We want to warn them that doing this is highly risky and foolish since all it takes is one slip-up to end your life, according to Longland.
“One mistake could ruin not only your own life but also inflict countless amounts of suffering and misery on your family and friends.
“All too frequently, trespassers in the live rail line cause lives to be lost.
“Anyone could be thrown into the tracks by a train simply by accelerating or decelerating abruptly, or by moving close to infrastructure.

Superintendent Cath Bradbury, North Central Police Transport Commander for NSW Police, stated that the dangers of participating in the act “should not be underestimated.”

Trespassing in rail corridors is punishable by fines of more than $550, and on Sydney Trains, it’s punishable by fines of up to $5500.
Buffer riding can be reported by passengers to train personnel or station personnel.
