Tokyo stocks open lower on US rate hike worries

Tokyo stocks opened lower Wednesday in nervous trade, extending US losses as investors remained wary about the pace of rate hikes planned by the US Federal Reserve to fight inflation.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index was down 0.96 percent, or 271.17 points, at 27,924.41 in early trade, while the broader Topix index slipped 0.84 percent, or 16.52 points, to 1,951.86.
