The trauma of a Sydney woman fleeing poverty and war contributed to the brutal death of her partner, whom she ran over with her car after finding him with another woman.
After a jury found Jackline Sabana Bona Musa, 47, guilty of killing Payman Thagipur, 31, in the parking lot of his Wentworth Point apartment building with her Toyota Kluger, she was sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison.
On June 27, 2020, feeling cut off from the relationship, Musa wrote Thagipur a protracted text message before looking for him in Granville and discovering him at his house in his pants with another woman.
The NSW Supreme Court heard evidence that she suddenly decided she wanted to gravely hurt Thagipur, so she drove towards him, ploughed through a bollard with him stuck to the bonnet, and slammed him against the parking lot wall.
The judge remarked on Friday that the man’s final ordeal was brief but scary and that he undoubtedly suffered greatly before passing away.
What actually happened was a terribly selfish imposition of violence against another human being.
For the “fatal explosion of emotion,” the judge gave a head sentence of 20 years, retroactive to Musa’s detention on June 27, 2020.
Her 14-year sentence of no parole will expire in June 2034.

The judge claimed that Musa’s childhood experiences of escaping poverty and conflict in Sudan had left her with untreated PTSD, anxiety, and despair.
He noted that she experienced emotions of worthlessness as a result of never finding happiness in romantic relationships and receiving harsh treatment from at least one ex-partner.
The court stated, “I have taken into account this woman’s conditions to some extent in sentencing mitigation, not as any kind of justification for this act of deadly violence, but as some explanation as to how it came to exist.
Button added that while the tragedy may be referred to as a “act of passion,” Australian culture would no longer accept such label.
He asserted that “modern Australia, in my opinion, expects a person who is dissatisfied and saddened by love matters to deal with those emotions maturely and without definitely hurting others, either emotionally or physically.
Domestic abuse of any form, committed by a person of any gender, and especially fatal domestic violence, are strongly condemned by Australian society and Australian criminal courts.
He claimed Musa had expressed no regret and had not even reluctantly taken responsibility for what had happened.
Prior to the murder, which the judge referred to as being “grossly out of character,” Button agreed that Musa had been a respectable citizen who had successfully established a life in Australia.
He remarked, “I accept that this formerly law-abiding woman of mature years’ imprisonment is a source of enormous embarrassment to her family and herself.
