A raid by the Israeli army in the city of Nablus in the occupied West Bank has resulted in at least 11 Palestinian deaths and numerous injuries.
According to the Palestinian health ministry, at least 102 other persons were hurt on Wednesday, 82 of them were struck by live bullets. Six people were in serious condition. The ministry reported that a 66-year-old man who was gas inhaled during the raid passed away later that day in the hospital.
Soon after the army invaded Nablus at 10am with scores of armored vehicles and special troops, widespread clashes broke out.
Before surrounding a residence where two wanted Palestinian rebels, Hossam Isleem and Mohammad Abdulghani, who were both slain, lived, the army closed off all city gates.
Together with the recently revealed Balata Brigades, the Lions’ Den armed group claimed in a statement that it participated in combat with Israeli forces during the operation. Teenage Palestinians threw rocks at armored army trucks.
Security personnel are currently acting in the city of Nablus, according to the Israeli army, which did not disclose any other information.
According to Nida Ibrahim of Al Jazeera, who was reporting from Nablus, Israeli soldiers opened fire without warning.
“According to reports, Israeli forces allegedly opened fire on neighbors, people inside their homes, and civilians going about their everyday business. Palestinians assert that Israel is behaving in this way because it is not held accountable and may kill Palestinians at will, according to Ibrahim.
Israel has focused its increasingly brutal assaults on Nablus and the adjoining city of Jenin over the past year. According to Palestinian journalist Mariam Barghouti of the news website Mondoweiss, “the concentration of armed resistance is expanding” in the cities.
The Lion’s Den and the Jenin Brigade continue to be the center of Palestinian armed resistance and new youth groups fighting, which is why they have become a target, according to Barghouti, who spoke to Al Jazeera. “Even though it is expanding to other areas of the West Bank, they have become a target,” he said.
People in Nablus’ Old City regarded the wreckage of what had once been a sizable house and the neighboring stores’ bullet-riddled facades. Crushed were parked automobiles. Furniture from the wrecked home was thrown among piles of wreckage, and the cement was smeared with blood.
A spokesperson for the ruling Hamas group in the Gaza Strip made a subliminal threat. “The patience of the resistance in Gaza is wearing thin as it witnesses the enemy’s rising crimes against our people in the occupied West Bank,” declared Abu Obeida.
In response, Palestinian political parties called for a nationwide strike on Wednesday in the cities of Ramallah and Nablus and urged Palestinians to demonstrate close to Israeli army checkpoints.
There have already been 61 Palestinians slain by Israeli forces in the occupied territories since the year 2023, including 13 children.
Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, stated, “We condemn the occupation’s raid into Nablus and we call for an end to the continuing attacks against our people.
