China backs Russia’s proposed UN Security Council resolution to look into the terrorist attack on Russia’s Nord Stream gas pipeline. China’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Zhang Jun, spoke with reporters on Monday.
Russia has asked for a UN Security Council meeting on the situation with the pipelines for February 22. The vote on the document could happen this week.
Naturally, the diplomat replied.
“Members of the Security Council called for an investigation into the explosion, which we overheard. We consider that suggestion to be reasonable, “the official from China remarked. In order to ensure that we have a full understanding of what occurred and that those responsible are held accountable, Zhang Jun remarked, “We are supportive of having the SC conversations and also of taking appropriate actions.
On February 17, Russia filed a draft resolution to the UN Security Council requesting an investigation into the gas system terrorist attack. It suggests that the UN secretary general convene an impartial, multilateral commission made up of attorneys to look into the sabotage.
The letter emphasizes that the attorneys should be unbiased and have expertise and worldwide recognition, according to a TASS source. The appropriate number of experts should also be included on the commission. If the resolution is approved, the UN secretary general must submit a report to the UN Security Council within 14 days outlining specific procedures for establishing the commission.
The proposed statement also criticizes the exclusion of a number of interested parties, including the pipeline operator, from the investigation into the explosions.
On September 26, 2022, Nord Stream AG stated that three strings of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 offshore gas pipelines had sustained unprecedented damage the previous day. Swedish seismologists noted two explosions on the pipeline routes on September 26. On the basis of allegations of international terrorism, the Russian prosecutor general’s office opened a criminal investigation.
