In the Cambodian border town of Poipet, a hotel and casino were destroyed by fire, leaving at least 10 people thought to be dead, according to police.
According to a preliminary Cambodian police report obtained by Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Thursday, a hotel-casino in Poipet city, close to the Thai border, caught fire on Wednesday at around 11:30 p.m. local time (16:30 p.m. GMT).
According to the article, “approximately 10 individuals perished and 30 people were injured.”
Authorities in Poipet, which is 400 kilometers (250 miles) northwest of the capital Phnom Penh, were quoted by local media as claiming that “more than 10 people” had killed and “more than 30” had been hurt in the casino fire.
According to the news website Phnom Penh Post, Nhem Phoeng, chief of administration at Poipet’s municipal offices, said the fire, which had been put out by Thursday morning, killed largely Cambodian and Thai casino staff.
The injured were taken to medical facilities in the Sa Kaeo province of Aranyaprathet, Thailand’s neighbor.
