Bengali’s great independence and national day has been celebrated in the main function room of the state parliament house in the heart of Sydney, the capital of the state of New South Wales, Australia.
Jonathan O’Day, Speaker of the New South Wales Parliament, was the chief guest at the event on Monday.
Speakers on the occasion were Consul General Khandaker Masudul Alam, Speaker Jonathan O’Dea, Minister for Amendment. Geoff Lee, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Chris Minus and Joseph La Posta, Executive Director of Multicultural NSW.
Previously the independence days of Bangladesh were celebrated in Canberra, the capital of Australia. Most of the Bangladeshis in Australia prefer to live in Sydney. It was very difficult for them to travel to Canberra, a city 400 km away, to attend events. The day is now being celebrated in Sydney as well as the High Commission in Canberra.
The Consul General addressed deep homage to the Father of Nation Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and all the heroic freedom fighters and martyrs who participated in the War of Independence for their supreme sacrifices.
The Independence Day event organized by the Bangladesh Consulate General. Among the guests there were several MPs, current and former mayors, local government representatives including councilors, senior government officials, heads of missions, representatives of diplomatic missions, media personnel, education-research sector representatives. Attended many more guests, including members of the Bangladeshi community.
The event ended with a pleasant Bengali cultural program.
