After a car crash near Ipswich in Queensland earlier this year, a 17-year-old girl is facing charges related to the death of an unborn baby.
The accident was a turning point in Haylee Loccisano’s life.
The 25-year-old was taken to the hospital quickly due to her serious injuries; her unborn child was in a critical condition.
“I just fixated on her the whole time that I remember being aware to focus in and she hadn’t moved,” said Loccisano.
After a week in a coma, Loccisano awoke to the news that Celeste, her miraculous baby, had died.
“I was unsurprised. “I knew it already,” she expressed.
She is facing charges related to the accident, which allegedly involved a 17-year-old girl driving the vehicle that hit her.
Since the passage of Sophie’s Law, her punishment for a conviction might be more severe.
Sarah and Peter Milosevic spent a decade fighting for Sophie’s Law after a drunk driver killed their newborn child in 2014.
Because unborn infants were not legally considered at the time, the perpetrator was not punished.
In an effort to more adequately acknowledge the wrongful death of an unborn child, Sophie’s Law was proposed to parliament last year.
Among Loccisano’s newfound allies is Mrs. Milosevic.
“She had guided me through every step of the way and I owe her everything for that,” stated Loccisano.
