The man’s murderer is still at large as police investigate the shooting death outside a North Melbourne Halloween party.
Approximately 3.15 in the morning today, emergency personnel were alerted to a guy lying on the pavement on Langford Street with a gunshot wound.
The man, whose identity is yet unknown, passed away on the spot.
As the outnumbered police officers blocked off the crime site, a group of young guys began fighting on the sidewalk of Macaulay Road, which was close by.
As tempers flared and a 17-year-old girl was handcuffed, relatives dashed beyond the police cordon.
On summons, she is expected to face charges of assaulting an officer.
Neither the shooter nor the victim’s attendance at the venue prior to this morning’s shooting was disclosed by the police.
The victim was shot multiple times, but detective acting inspector Alan Rumble could not say for sure why or how many times.
Whatever happened was “horrendous,” he declared.
North Melbourne, which is mostly an industrial area, is covered in surveillance cameras.
Before the body was retrieved for the coroner this afternoon, forensics spent hours with the man’s remains today.
The event has not resulted in any arrests or charges.
The police have determined that no one else is in immediate danger.
“We’ve got a lot of resources allocated, a lot of specialist resources allocated including local police,” added Rumble.
