Following the LNP’s triumph, outgoing Queensland premier Steven Miles admitted defeat and surrendered the election.
In a stunning election that ended Labor’s nearly decade-long rule in the state, Miles called David Crisafulli this morning to admit defeat.
With the concession call, Queensland’s government has changed hands.
After a close count last night, the LNP appeared to be in a strong position to secure a slim victory in Queensland.
At the conclusion of the night, the LNP secured 48 seats, ensuring that Crisafulli will become the 41st premier of Queensland.
According to Crisafulli, the voters have chosen a majority LNP administration and a new beginning.
“To borrow a phrase from a different era and a different political movement, ‘It’s time’ — it’s time.”
For Queensland, it was a moment of renewal.
Even though Labor might have lost the majority, Miles did nothing to congratulate Crisafulli last night.
He went on to say that the LNP’s ability to create a majority government was in question.
At the beginning of the Queensland election, Labor held 51 seats and the LNP had 35.
On stage at the Murrumba Tavern with his family by his side, Miles stated, “We will know more as counting continues in coming days.
Many seats remain too close to call.” Considering the challenges we faced, this is an outstanding outcome.
