Police have charged a man with the claimed 1988 rape of a young woman in an inner area of Melbourne.
Last week, the 57-year-old man was detained in Queensland and sent over to Victoria yesterday under charges including rape, kidnapping, and false imprisonment.
Police claim that an unknown guy seized a 19-year-old lady strolling down Carlisle Street in St Kilda on January 23, 1988.
Then supposedly transported to Elwood Beach, the victim was sexually attacked.
Although police were notified of the occurrence at the time, no culprit could be found.
More information surfaced in May 2021, and investigators renewed their probe.
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Brett Robinson expressed hope the man’s detention will provide the woman some “closure and relief”.
“To be a 19-year-old woman, pleasantly walking home after a fun night out, who suddenly had her world changed instantly in this way, is unimaginable.”
“Detectives persisted in their inquiry, hoping we might bring justice for this terrible crime.”
The accused is set to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court next January; he has been remanded.
