After the bodies of a mother and her two young children were hauled from Sydney’s south-west, a Georges River search and rescue operation concluded tragically.
Following the three’s reported discomfort at 10.15 a.m. today before emergency personnel came, onlookers tried to save the family.
Shortly after, the 32-year-old woman was hauled to the shore but could not be saved.
For the seven-year-old daughter and five-year-old son, police and State Emergency Service volunteers started a massive search and rescue effort.
About 2pm metres off a jetty, divers discovered their remains in the water.
“It’s beyond words how terrible it would be for people who observed what happened,” NSW Police acting superintendent Luke Scott said.
“Several onlookers at the park tried to save the mother and the kids on their own initiative.
Sadly, they failed in that as well. “We have several lines of inquiry to investigate to ascertain what happened.” Police reported the family was local to the area.
