The state parliament of South Australia has received an email resignation from David Speirs, a former leader of the opposition.
His six-year political career came to a sudden end only days before his drug charge court hearing next month.
Despite the political uproar that the white powder video controversy caused, the accusations have nothing to do with it.
Just before today’s question period, the speaker received Speirs’ resignation in his inbox.
“It has been the greatest privilege of my life to serve my community as a representative in the House of Assembly,” stated the politician.
“I wish all members success as they seek to do their very best for the state of South Australia.”
A by-election might be held as early as November 16, the very day after Speirs’ court appearance, as the seat of Black will be proclaimed empty tomorrow.
