A woman died after being struck by a falling tree branch in Sydney’s south-west when the city was battered by strong winds.
The woman, estimated to be in her 60s, was hit by the branch while pushing a shopping trolley down Castlereagh Street in Liverpool around 1pm.
Paramedics treated her on the site, but she was unable to be revived.
Residents on the street said that branches often snapped off in severe gusts.
“I feel terrible, very terrible and scared, I have family here, you never know which kid could be walking around and then a thing like this happens,” according to a resident.
It comes amid a day of strong winds in Sydney, with gusts of up to 89km/h reported in Sydney Harbour, making boat rides uncomfortable.
The wind chill made temperatures seem nearly 10 degrees cooler than official readings of high teens along the NSW coast today.
The winds caused dangerous surf and severe weather warnings along the coast from Kiama in the south to Forster in the north.
