Two boys, ages nine and eleven, were discovered dead at a house in NSW’s Blue Mountains, leading to the arrest of their mother.
Just before 1:40 p.m., the father of the boys, Russell and Ben, found their dead at the Faulconbridge residence.
Police suspect that the multiple injuries that their 42-year-old mother Trish Smith sustained were self-inflicted.
Smith, the resident of the house, was transported by EMS, under police guard, to Westmead Hospital in a stable state.
Since then, she has been taken into custody.
Police failed to comment on the manner of the children’s deaths and no weapon has yet been found.
There is no continuous threat to the community, and the police are not hunting for anyone else.
The issue forced the adjoining Springwood High School to use its oval as a helipad for medical evacuations.
Superintendent John Nelson said the mother is only known to the police for very minor offences.
At a press conference, he stated, “It’s early stages, but what we can say is there are no indications of any history with us in relation to this matter.”
Detectives looking into homicide are looking into the deaths; they spoke with neighbours throughout the afternoon to try to determine what caused this.
The father of the boys is helping the authorities with their investigation as well.
“Tragic” was how NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb described the incident.
