Following a tense standoff between highly armed police and a property in Melbourne’s east, a man has been taken into custody.
A significant police presence, comprising of negotiators, specialized officers, and the dog squad, was present outside a Knoxfield residence on Anne Road starting at 7 a.m. today.
The individual inside the house, who the police thought was armed, was asked to pick up his phone so he could speak with them over a loudspeaker.
The decision to attack the house was reached by early afternoon.
There were pops and blasts as tear gas was used to open the property to highly armed tactical officers dressed in camouflage.
The Heidelberg West resident, 52, was taken into custody.
According to Mark News, the man was bitten by a dog during the arrest and was subsequently transferred to Box Hill Hospital.
It is thought that the individual may be experiencing problems relating to his mental health.
Authorities claimed the man was a part of a gun-related incident yesterday afternoon after they observed a black Honda that appeared to be stolen on Station Street at 3:30 p.m.
A police cruiser drew up alongside the Honda and an officer got out when the vehicle stopped at a red light at the intersection of Eley Road.
The male driver of the Honda is accused by the police of picking up a gun and pointing it at the officer.
Police claim that after leaving the site, he did not cause any physical harm to anyone.
The 52-year-old will be interviewed at a later time, according to the police.
