In a terrifying crash that happened overnight in Perth’s south, a teenager lost their life and six others were hospitalised.
There are many tributes for Nick Campo, 18, who is being honoured for his athletic prowess and humanity.
Daniel, his father, posted on social media, saying, “Our lives have been ripped apart, 18 years old, a future with so much hope taken away.”
It was only two days ago that Nick celebrated that significant birthday.
He was in the ute with five other youths when it rolled late last night on Farrington Road in North Lake and struck a black jeep on the opposite side of the street.
A guy and a woman in their 20s were transported to the hospital due to non-life-threatening injuries while they were inside that vehicle.
Nick’s two South Fremantle Football club colleagues, the seventeen-year-old driver, and another young man were all seated in the ute with him.
The tragedy, according to Premier Roger Cook, is “another reminder for all of us to take extra care.”
The football community as a whole is grieving. According to Cameron Britt, CEO of South Fremantle, “we are a club in deep shock”.
His old club in Kalgoorlie, where Campo grew up, praised him as “a popular friend to many” with a “life full of promise that was taken way too soon”.
According to Mark News, among the first responders were the boys’ teammates who were riding in the vehicle behind the ute at the time of the collision.
As they cope with the death of a partner, those players are relying on one another.
