For the first time, a West Australian mother accused of causing her twin daughters’ deaths in a vehicle accident has had her case brought up in court.
Accused of two charges of reckless driving resulting in death, Rachel Lisa Van Oyen did not show up in person as her attorney said she was “struggling with the process”.
In Carrabin, about 300 kilometres west of Perth, her seven-year-old children, Macey and Riley, perished when the car they were in went off the road and struck a tree near the Great Eastern Highway.
According to police, their mother was driving when the collision happened early on February 18.
Detectives claimed that all three of the passengers in the trio were wearing seatbelts when they returned from Kalgoorlie to their house in Halls Head.
Oyen, 31, was brought to the hospital following the collision but was later released.
August is when she’ll be back in court.
