This week, a grandma from Melbourne had two surgeries after an unsuccessful Marketplace transaction left her with a shattered foot.
Now, the Shepparton woman is requesting that Facebook tighten security on its online marketplace, alleging a guy set up a phony account to arrange for someone to take the car she was selling there.
After the car Rebekah Streader was attempting to sell on Facebook Marketplace crushed her foot, she will be unable to walk for several months.
She refused to part with her Holden ClubSport.
However, the Coles employee and single mother claims she was in dire need of money to maintain her family’s roof.
Through Facebook Marketplace, Streader placed an ad, and a man interested in purchasing the vehicle scheduled a test drive.
The instant he arrived at her house was recorded by Streader’s Ring door bell, but it missed the subsequent events.
Streader gave the man the keys when he wanted to take a test drive, but before she could get into the passenger seat, he locked the doors.
The woman’s son, who is fifteen years old, saw her pleading with the man to stop, but he ran over her foot and then quickly drove away.
“This car is something I bought years ago, and I was tapping on the window to get him to stop thinking, ‘I can’t lose it.'” Wiping away tears, Streader told. “I can’t afford to lose it.”
Facebook requires significant reform. People can get conned or fleeced far too easily.”
Although Streader has made an effort to locate the man on Facebook, she thinks he messaged her using a fictitious account.
According to her description, he is roughly 170 cm tall, medium-built, and bearded.
Police are looking into the matter after being informed.
In the interim, friends are using GoFundMe to raise money to assist the grandmother in getting back on her feet.
