Wayne Wilmot, a convicted rapist, was recently released from jail after serving nearly thirty years.
The 51-year-old was just 15 years old in 1988 when he and four other adolescents abducted, raped, and killed Sydney bank clerk Janine Balding, who was 20 years old.
One of the individuals imprisoned for the crime, Wilmot, received a term of nearly ten years for his assistance in her kidnapping and abuse.
Wilmot assaulted four more women in the late 1990s after being granted freedom, and he was subsequently sent to prison.
After learning that Wilmot would be released today, Balding’s family expressed worries to victim advocates that he would commit crimes again.
According to victims’ advocate Howard Brown, “it has put enormous stress on the victims and they’re quite churned up about it.”
“The safety of others is more important to them than their own safety. “Because they’ve already experienced what Wilmot is capable of and they don’t want anyone else to have to experience a similar episode.”
Wilmot has been residing in an institution under supervision with severe rules since his discharge.
Later this month, a court hearing is scheduled to consider a request for an extended supervision order.
