Premier Roger Cook of Western Australia says his government is thinking about granting police more authority to combat knife crime in the wake of two horrific attacks in Sydney.
“Our police continue to monitor these situations very carefully and we’re in close contact with the federal government on any terrorist-related activity which maybe relevant to Western Australia,” Cook stated.
John Quigley, the attorney general, stated that he plans to provide the state with maximum protection.
Queensland gave police more authority to stop people and search them for firearms last year.
In transit hubs, public transportation, and safe night precincts, this can be done without a warrant.
In less than a year, police in Queensland seized almost 400 guns.
Quigley has begun working on a submission regarding the necessity of comparable laws in Washington.
“We are not proposing a stop and search for the general population, but there is an argument to have wanding in protected entertainment precincts,” he stated.
Additionally, he will investigate whether shopping malls should have the same authority to stop and search people.
“I’ll be thinking about all that has occurred with stabbings in Perth and throughout Australia.
“It’s a dreadful trend.”
