Regarding an alleged shooting in broad daylight that prompted an emergency and resulted in the lockdown of a Cairns area, a man has been accused.
Around 1:00 PM on Thursday, police were called to Collins Avenue in Edge Hill when a witness saw a man get out of a white car and shoot at the driver of a black Audi.
Before the three of them left the scene, a woman who was a passenger in the black Audi assisted the injured man inside the vehicle.
Later, while authorities searched for the suspected shooter, they discovered the damaged and empty Audi on Pease Street, close to Edge Hill State School.
They also declared an emergency.
A perimeter was set up around the area and residents were instructed not to leave while multiple police searched the area.
Later on in the day, the emergency declaration was lifted, and a 43-year-old man was discovered with a leg gunshot wound that was not life-threatening.
Earlier this week, Detective Acting Inspector Jason Chetham stated that although the cars had crashed prior to the shooting, the event was not caused by road rage.
“It’s probably individuals who are acquainted,” he stated during a press conference on Thursday.
A 35-year-old Varsity Lakes man was charged by police today with violating an injunction pertaining to information required to access electronically stored material and with conduct designed to maim, disfigure, or cripple.
Tomorrow, he will appear before Townsville Magistrates Court.
