An altercation over a pack of cigarettes is said to have resulted in a deadly stabbing in Far North Queensland overnight, and the 63-year-old man has been charged with murder.
When police arrived at the residence on Melaleuca Street in the Manunda area of Cairns at 8:15 p.m., they discovered a 62-year-old victim with a single neck stab wound.
He passed away at the spot even though officers started first aid before paramedics could arrive.
According to Detective Acting Inspector Jason Chetham, the two had been consuming large amounts of alcohol all day.
“We understand there was an argument over a packet of cigarettes throughout the course preceding that event,” he continued.
“No one else was involved in the offence…there was another witness at the scene and we’ve taken a statement from that individual.”
According to Chetham, a kitchen knife was found on the premises.
Manunda, 63, was taken into custody and accused of killing someone.
Today is his scheduled appearance in the Cairns Magistrates Court.
