On April 13, voters in Scott Morrison’s former constituency will cast ballots in a byelection.
Speaker Milton Dick issued a writ today for the byelection in the Cook seat of Sydney, making it the fourth held since Labor assumed power nearly two years ago.
Applications for postal votes are now being accepted, and the byelection’s pre-polling will begin on April 2.
Morrison’s resignation in January sparked the byelection.
The former prime minister announced his resignation from parliament, citing a desire to take on new challenges and spend more time with his family.
Morrison won the seat by a margin of 12.4% in 2022, making it one of the safest Liberal seats in the nation.
Labor is not allowed to have a candidate.
Labor can propose a challenger until March 21.
Simon Kennedy, a former management consultant who lost his bid to run in Bennelong in 2022, was the Liberal preselection winner for Cook and is predicted to win the byelection with ease.
Parts of the Sutherland Shire and the St George area are connected by this electorate, which is situated in southern Sydney.
It encompasses the suburbs of Blakehurst, Monterey, Sans Souci, and Sandringham in the south, as well as Cronulla, Kurnell, Caringbah, Miranda, Sylvania, and Gymea.
