Detectives looking into homicides are examining the death of a man in Melbourne who was taken into custody.
According to police, they were summoned to reports of a guy causing trouble on Morrison Street in Kilsyth about 11 p.m. yesterday. The man appeared to be under the influence of drugs. He was armed with a wooden pole.
Police said the man was detained until emergency services arrived by an off-duty officer and a member of the public.
After that, the 39-year-old Kilsyth man stopped responding to the police.
“The members commenced CPR on the man, including treating him with a defibrillator retrieved from the nearby police station, until paramedics arrived,” Victoria Police reported.
“He was taken to hospital however died just after 6.30am today.”
We’ll write out a report for the coroner.
As with all fatalities in custody, homicide detectives will look into the case under the supervision of the Professional Standards Command.
The body-worn camera footage that recorded the event will also be examined as part of the investigation.
