In a significant event that resulted in street closures and “chaos” close to Flinders Street Station, a man opened fire in the heart of Melbourne.
According to Victoria Police, the man approached multiple protective services officers brandishing shattered glass as a weapon.
“Two PSOs have deployed OC spray, which didn’t appear to have any affect,” police stated.
“One PSO discharged his firearm, with the man being struck once.”
Just after 5:30 p.m., police and PSOs were called to the Princes Street Bridge in response to an unconnected incident.
The man was rushed to the hospital with injuries that are thought to not be life-threatening.
As seen Nick Alonso reported that he noticed a sizable gathering of people while riding the tram by the art precinct.
“One of the women there had a big gash on her face and she was bleeding,” Alonso stated.
He claimed that after continuing on the tram to Flinders Street Station, he witnessed the arrival of police and the man’s detention.
“They placed him on the ground and shackled him. There was pandemonium.”
According to police, there was no threat to the community and the incident had nothing to do with terrorism.
When a firearm is discharged, Armed Crime Squad detectives will conduct an investigation in accordance with established procedure, under the supervision of the Professional Standards Command.
