Queensland’s new premier, Seven Miles, has taken the oath of office.
After serving as premier for eight years, Miles became the 40th premier of Queensland when Annastacia Palaszczuk resigned on Sunday, citing a desire to pursue other opportunities.
The Labour caucus did not protest Miles’ election today.
Shortly after giving a press conference and outlining his plans for the state, Miles was sworn in at Queensland’s Parliament House.
“I promise to work day and night to earn the trust of Queenslanders,” he stated.
Miles pledged to provide the state with a “new and refreshed approach” to the opportunities and problems it faces.
In order to develop the future of the state, Miles stated he would establish a new Queensland Leaders Forum, bringing together the business, industry, community, and unions in one location.
“We carried out the COVID response in this manner. It performed admirably. He declared, “I’m bringing it back.”
Miles also declared that he will increase the state’s goal of reducing emissions by 75% by 2035 in response to climate change.
“By legislating this target, we are making a very clear statement to the world that Queensland is the place to do business if you are looking to use clean energy to create prosperity,” he stated.
In addition, following debate over the restructuring of the Olympics, he is evaluating the development plan and creating a delivery authority for the 2032 games.
“The mission is simple, make sure the Games work for Queensland and deliver for Queenslanders,” he stated.
He said he will be a premier who brings the bush and the city together.
“A premier that works for Queenslanders, whether you live in our regions, our suburbs or the inner city because there is so much more that unites us than divides us.,” he stated.
Caucus chose Cameron Dick to be the deputy premier.
Serving the state, in his words, is a “extraordinary honour”.
“It will be a great honour to work with Steven Miles as the next premier of Queensland,” Dick stated.
“Steven and I share the same beliefs about how cabinet and government should work in this state.”
“Our great state is set up for a great future,” remarked the governor.
As negotiations over the new ministry continue, Miles’ cabinet will be reorganised and made public in the coming days.
Craig Crawford, the minister of seniors and disability services, and Palaszczuk will need to fill their ministerial positions while Mark Bailey, the minister of transport, and Stirling Hinchliffe, the minister of tourism, have already agreed to step down from the front bench.
