Steven Miles, the premier-designate of Queensland, has officially named Treasurer Cameron Dick as his running partner ahead of Friday’s crucial meeting to determine the future of the state’s leadership group.
The nomination of Dick to be deputy premier came after Health Minister Shannon Fentiman withdrew from the leadership contest, acknowledging that the numbers did not support her.
To choose the candidates for prime minister, deputy prime minister, and the rest of the leadership group, the Labor Party caucus will convene on Friday.
It occurs a few days after Annastacia Palaszczuk declared it had been the “honor of her life” to work for the state and that she would be leaving the position after more than eight years.
Only hours after Palaszcuzk’s resignation, the deputy premier was the first to submit his name.
According to Miles, Dick was a capable treasurer who contributed to the growth of the state’s economy.
“We have been friends for a long time, we share a vision for Queensland, one where the government’s job is to build for the future,” Miles stated this afternoon.
Miles declared that Fentiman will not be removed from the health portfolio.
This afternoon, Fentiman promised her social media fans that she would “continue working tirelessly” for the government.
“It is clear that a majority of Labor members of parliament will support Steven Miles to be the next leader of the Labor Party, and therefore the next premier of Queensland,” she stated.
“As a result, I will not be standing as a candidate for the Labor leadership when caucus meets on Friday.”
