Today, pro-Palestine demonstrators extended their protests to Sydney’s east, where they tried to stop an Israeli trading company’s vessel from arriving at Port Botany.
The action was only one of many recent protests that the Australian communities of Israelis and Palestinians have undertaken in their ongoing struggle for Middle East peace.
Union members joined the demonstration as the group tried to stop a ship owned by the shipping line ZIM from arriving.
Dean Smith of the Maritime Union of Australia stated, “To know that innocent people – kids, families, moms and dads – are dying, it’s just not on mate.”
The ship itself never arrived at the harbour; upon learning of the demonstration, it sailed elsewhere.
Despite requests from the authorities to cancel the rally, it took place today.
Earlier this week, Premier Chris Minns stated that although he supports nonviolent protests, demonstrators cannot halt trade.
Meanwhile, a brawl between pro-Palestinian and Israeli fans broke out on Friday night after arsonists allegedly targeted a burger establishment in southeast Melbourne early on Friday morning.
This resulted in multiple arrests and the evacuation of a nearby synagogue.
The local Jewish community, who was impacted last night in their worship, received an apology from the organisers.
