A motorist who caused a horrific head-on collision on the Sydney Harbour Bridge while driving on ice has admitted to a judge that he is “ashamed of himself” and that he wants to assist other people overcome drug addiction.
In March 2022, Christopher Walker, 21, made threats to murder an Uber driver. He then stole the driver’s four-wheel drive and crashed it into southbound traffic, igniting an explosion that trapped three drivers—including Walker—in the flaming wreck.
After the event, Tradie Andrew Cheng was hospitalised for a month to recover, and he was left with permanent damage.
Walker took ice the morning of the crash, according to evidence presented before the NSW District Court today, and he was unable to recall what happened that day.
He says that in the twenty months that have passed, he has not taken drugs, and he is now sober, employed full-time, and pursuing his goal of becoming a counsellor to assist those who are struggling with addiction.
While addressing the court that he is going to become a father and that he wants to raise his son to be a good man, Walker also started crying.
The prosecution maintained that incarceration was the proper punishment.
Walker has entered a guilty plea to four offences, including reckless driving resulting in great bodily damage, which has a seven-year maximum sentence.
The soon-to-be father is still free on bond pending his sentencing in the following year.
