Three fires in the south-west of Queensland are becoming more manageable for firefighters as a result of a brief improvement in the fireground’s circumstances.
Emergency warnings are in effect for people in certain areas of Tara, Wieambilla, and The Gums, but communities are still on edge.
Twenty fire engines have been dispatched to the Tara fire, where excellent weather has allowed firefighters to combine control lines.
Inspector Kent Barron of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) noted that although work has been successful thus far, the situation is still dynamic.
In order to reinforce containment lines, firefighters have concentrated their efforts on the north-west quadrant of the Tara fire. Their work will continue into the evening and tomorrow.
Today, a fire at Hannaford burned within the containment lines, but firefighters managed to contain multiple minor outbreaks.
While this was going on, local landowners and firemen worked to keep the Moonie fire contained within containment lines.
Tuesday is going to bring more fire weather, so firefighters are fortifying containment lines in preparation.
“It’s a little bit of a break, a little bit of time for us to do some work to get on the front foot,” Barron stated.
“Through no fault of the crews out on the fireground we’ve been incredibly reactive to these fires.”They are travelling so quickly, and the fire behaviour is intense.
“Today was just an opportunity with some lighter winds to get on the front foot.”Though not quite to our liking, the weather was nonetheless better.”
