This morning’s explosion at a factory in Melbourne’s west claimed the life of a man.
Around 9.45 am, reports of a chemical explosion at an industrial structure in Swann Drive, Derrimut, prompted the call to emergency services.
At least 30 people were taken out of the building as firefighters battled to put out a following fire brought on by the blast.
Then, a body of a 44-year-old Hoppers Crossing man was discovered within the facility.
According to a spokeswoman for Fire Rescue Victoria, a chemical reaction is thought to have set off the explosion.
The fire was put out by the factory’s sprinkler system, which received assistance from roughly 80 firemen using breathing apparatus and about 30 emergency service vehicles, including HAZMAT teams.
Earlier, Ambulance Victoria reported treating a number of patients, one of whom looked to be in a stable condition.
Additionally, paramedics are keeping an eye on the 28 or so evacuated individuals. The distance from the Melbourne CBD to Derrimut is 17 kilometers.
VicEmegency has issued a warning that smoke will be visible and that several roads in the region may be closed for Derrimut, Laverton North, Sunshine West, and Truganina.
The Coroner will receive a report, according to the police, who also stated WorkSafe had been informed. The cause of the fire is still being investigated by detectives.
